VIVIAN ALMAS

SLEEPING DISTRICTS

Sleeping Districts records apartment blocks videoed from its corresponding opposite block. Filmed in Lithuania, Almas explores the patterns of human activities when people enter the privacy of their own homes. As her camera pans across the interior spaces of these occupants, the multi-complex personalities of individuals are interrogated to reveal the many masks people wear as they go about their lives outside their apartments, and what sort of masking might necessitate their existence inside their own homes. Bedside table lamps illuminate their physicality, yet the interior identities of the occupants may only be revealed away from the prying eyes of outsiders.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland in 2002 and raised in Lithuania, Vivian has cultivated a diverse artistic background, having obtained diplomas in both music and fine art. Subsequently, it was during her studies for a BA in Photography at Falmouth University that Vivian discovered alternative avenues for self-expression. Her artistic practice now encompasses various mediums, including film, music, painting, and performance, which seamlessly intertwine to form a cohesive body of work.

Vivian's artistic exploration extends beyond the visual realm. With a strong interest in philosophy, film culture, and sound art, she delves into themes of authenticity, alienation, and societal norms. These inquiries inform her creative process and inspire thought-provoking pieces. One recurring element in Vivian's practice is her deliberate utilization of the contrast between man-made and natural environments, allowing her to evoke unique narratives within the spaces that surround her.
